平野氏は機密費の運用について「国民から疑念を持たれないよう、担当であるわたしが使途について責任を持って使っていく」と強調。適切な運用をどう担保するのかとの質問に対しては、「わたしを信頼していただきたい」「（可能な部分は）会計検査院のチェックも受けている」などと述べた。
　民主党が使途公開を求めていたこととの整合性については、「過去そう言ってきたことは事実だが、現実にわたしがその職に立ったときに、報償費という性格上、相手のあることだ（と認識を改めた）」と釈明した。　
　平野氏は政権発足直後の９月１７日の記者会見で、機密費について「そんなものあるんですか。全く承知していないからコメントできない」と述べていた。しかし、５日の記者会見では、政権発足前後に河村建夫前官房長官から引き継ぎを受けていたことを認めた。（2009/11/05-12:32）
